Der vorliegende Artikel operiert auf zwei Ebenen. Erstens illustriert er eine Möglichkeit, wie Sozialforschung ‚Big Data‘ in den Griff bekommen kann. Das gelingt ihr nicht, indem sie mit der im IT-Feld praktizierten Datenanalyse konkurriert. Stattdessen kann sie diese Analyse selbst, ihre Analysedokumente und das darin zum Ausdruck kommende Wissen zum Gegenstand machen. Am Beispiel eines Webanalysereportes wird gezeigt, wie bei der soziologischen Auswertung praktisch verfahren wurde, und es werden erste Ergebnisse skizziert. Zweitens bietet der Artikel, vom konkreten empirischen Fall abstrahierend, eine Antwort auf die methodische Herausforderung, die sich der Soziologie angesichts der weit fortgeschrittenen Digitalisierung stellt. Sozialforschung sieht sich mit einer schnell wachsenden Anzahl digitaler Dokumente konfrontiert. Der Artikel systematisiert Erfahrungswissen zum praktischen Umgang u.a. mit Akten, Texten und Bildern in der qualitativen Sozialforschung und erarbeitet daraus vier Dimensionen von Dokumenten. Zum einen solche, die in der ‘klassischen’ Dokumentenanalyse zentral sind, neben dem Gebrauch ist das ihre textliche Performativität, und andererseits solche, die in der soziologischen Forschung bislang eher implizit oder jenseits des dokumentenanalytischen Diskurses Beachtung gefunden haben: nämlich die grafisch-visuelle Performativität und die Materialität.

Digital Documents and the Sociology of Digital Analysis. On Remote Usages and their Representation

Abstract

The following article operates on two levels: Firstly, it illustrates the ways social research can manage ‘Big Data’. This is not achieved by competing with the kind of data analysis practiced within the field of IT, but rather by scrutinizing the analysis itself, its documents, and the knowledge incorporated therein. Taking a web analysis report as an example, the article shows just how the sociological analysis takes place in practice. It further outlines first results of this insight. Secondly, turning from specific empirical cases towards the abstract, it tries to find an answer to the methodological challenges Sociology faces in light of far advanced digitalization. Empirical social research is confronted with a fast-growing number of digital documents. The article seeks to systemize practical knowledge on how qualitative social research deals with, among others, records, papers, and images. Four dimensions of documents are specified: On the one hand, those that are crucial in ‘classical’ document analysis - besides its use this includes its textual performativity - and, on the other hand, those that have stayed rather implicit in sociological research up until now, and were mainly noted outside of the discourse of document analysis: graphical- visual performativity and materiality.
