Die Frage danach, was ein Familienfoto uns zu sagen vermag, gründet in der Annahme, dass in dem Bild Bedeutungen eingeschrieben sind und diese auf Ansichten und Einstellungen derer verweisen können, die es produziert oder die seine Komposition veranlasst haben. In diesem Sinne liegt die sozialwissenschaftliche Relevanz von Familienfotos nicht in erster Linie in den abgebildeten Bildproduzenten als solchen, sondern in dem, was sich in der Darstellung über die Darstellenden dokumentiert, nämlich deren individueller oder kollektiver Habitus sowie Milieus und Kontexte der Habitualisierung. Motiviert durch Bohnsacks Analyse eines Fotos von Sebastião Salgado wird in diesem Aufsatz ein Familienfoto aus derselben Region im Nordosten Brasiliens nach der dokumentarischen Methode interpretiert. Dabei geht nicht um eine komparative Analyse beider Fotos, sondern um einen Versuch, die einzelnen Schritte der dokumentarischen Methode anhand eines anderen Familienfotos aufzuzeigen. Mit diesem Beispiel lassen sich neue Forschungsperspektiven erschließen, u.a. die komparative Analyse von Familienfotos im Bereich der interkulturellen und vergleichenden Forschung. Eine Verständigung durch Bilder setzt jedoch einen Prozess der Interpretation voraus und erfordert ein methodisch kontrolliertes Fremdverstehen bei der Analyse von Familienfotos aus unterschiedlichen Milieus. Die dokumentarische Methode bietet somit einen privilegierten Zugang zur Erschließung fremder Erfahrungsräume.

Photography as Qualitative Social Research Tool: Documentary Method and Analysis of a Family Picture off Ceará, Brazil

Abstract

The question of what a family picture can tell us, is grounded in the assumption that inscribed meanings in photos may refer to opinions and attitudes of the producers or of those who were responsible for the composition of the future. In this sense, the sociological relevance of family pictures is not primarily linked to the producers in the photo as such, but in what is documented in the representation of the represented actors, namely their individual or collective habitus and their milieus and contexts of habitualisation. Ralf Bohnsack analysis of a family picture from the northeast region of Brazil, produced by Sebastião Salgado, was the motivation for the interpretation of another family picture from the same region under the documentary method. Not the comparison of both pictures but the individual steps of the documentary method presented in a different family photo is the main focus. The analysis of pictures as discussed in this paper can open new research perspectives, e.g. the comparative analysis of family pictures in the field of intercultural and international comparative research. However, understanding through images presumes a process of interpretation and requires a methodologically controlled understanding of the others in the analysis of families from different milieus. However, the documentary method offers a privileged access to unknown spaces of experiences and to the milieus of the producers of images.
